Chapter 9

A Banquet in Your Honor

Tirza stood in the middle of an ornate bedroom. This would be her bedroom for as long as she and Eli stayed here—an idea that still made her want to squeal with delight and jump up and down.

I have a room in an actual palace!

She stared into a gilded mirror, evaluating the dress the queen had given to her for tonight’s banquet. She’d been looking at it, lost in its beauty, for at least ten minutes. She’d never worn something like this—never dreamed of wearing a dress like this, either. Of course, it was rare that she wore dresses at all. She preferred her jeans, a T-shirt, and her Chucks. However, she would make an exception for this dress.

The dress, its bodice snug yet comfortable, draped loosely around her legs and flowed down to her glittering crystal shoes—flats, thankfully, as she hated heels with a passion. It made her think of a ball gown, minus the large hoop skirt of every Disney princess’s dress that would make it impossible to sit. Was that why, in movies with balls, everyone always stood around whenever they weren’t dancing? She was grateful this dress was more practical.

It’s so beautiful, I hope I don’t snag it or spill something on it.

Tirza smoothed her hands along the flowing, light blue silk that fitted her perfectly. A silver cloak, fastened by a twisted cord, draped over her bare shoulders. The cloak’s high neck made her feel a bit like a vampire.

Giggling, she grabbed the cloak and pulled it over her face, hiding everything but her eyes. “Look into my eyes,” she said with a horrible imitation of a Dracula accent and wiggled her eyebrows.

“Uh, what are you doing?” Eli asked, startling Tirza. She spun around, lowering the cloak from her face.

Eli stood in the doorway wearing a pale blue suit with silver accents and a white-collar button-up shirt. For once, he wasn’t fussing about not being in shorts.

“Nothing,” she said, standing straighter and raising her chin as if she was every bit the princess she felt in this dress. “You look nice in that suit. Papa would say it suits you.” She grinned.

Eli rolled his eyes and stepped into her room. He closed the open half of the large, gilded double doors. Ornate patterns of several inlaid smooth red stones—rubies?—decorated the doors. The entire bedroom was a dream for Tirza.

When she’d woken up that morning and gotten out of bed, the bed had made itself. Fresh, warm blueberry muffins—at least they tasted like blueberry to her—crusted with fine sugar appeared on the narrow rectangular table by the window as soon as she had wondered aloud what time breakfast would be served. Next to the plate of muffins was a steaming bowl of something like oats and honey. A tall glass of juice, unlike any fruit juice she’d ever had and delicately sweet and smooth, rose up from inside the table a moment later at the exact moment she’d become thirsty. The floors were smooth stone, with fine, soft rugs that blanketed most of the chamber.
